Health Minister refuses to commit funding for public access to radiotherapy in Shepparton

The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has praised the construction of the GenesisCare cancer facility in Shepparton which will finally make radiotherapy treatment available to Shepparton cancer patients for the first time but has blasted the refusal of the Health Minister to commit recurrent funding for public patients to access the facility.

In an adjournment debate directly to the Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos, Ms Lovell sought an update on negotiations between the Government and private health provider GenesisCare that will ensure that radiotherapy treatment at the planned cancer facility in Corio Street will be free for public as well as private patients.

Ms Lovell last raised the need for recurrent funding for the centre in March, with Ms Mikakos indicating that negotiations between the Government and GenesisCare were continuing.

Ms Mikakos responded immediately to Ms Lovell’s latest enquiry, refusing to commit funding for public patients to access the facility and six months after her initial response just reiterated that negotiations between the parties were continuing.

The GenesisCare radiotherapy facility is due to open by the end of the year and Ms Lovell emphasised the importance of funding to ensure treatment is available to all patients that need it.

Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell:

“The radiotherapy facility being built in Corio Street by private health provider GenesisCare is a potential game-changer for local cancer patients who will be able to receive this life saving treatment right here in Shepparton.

“To ensure that public patients incur no out-of-pocket expenses when receiving radiotherapy at the facility, it is essential that the Government commits funding to cover these treatment costs.

“It is disappointing that the Minister’s response has not altered since I last raised the issue in March and with the facility to open by the end of the year I urge Ms Mikakos to provide the funding to ensure that public patients will be able to access free radiotherapy services at the GenesisCare facility.”
