The Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has thrown her support behind calls for the construction of a new public hospital in Swan Hill.
Ms Lovell’s backing comes as hundreds of people rallied outside the existing hospital to send a message to the State Government that now was the time for a new hospital.
Ms Lovell raised the matter during an adjournment debate in State Parliament this week, calling on Heath Minister Jill Hennessy to visit the hospital and commit funding to rebuild Swan Hill Hospital.
Ms Lovell said that despite servicing a catchment of over 35,000 people, the Swan Hill Hospital had always suffered from underinvestment during the life of Victorian Labor Governments and the time had come for a rebuild of the hospital.
“Parts of the Swan Hill Hospital are unable to be used due to white ant infestation, creating an occupational health and safety issue for patients, visitors and staff. The Swan Hill community know their hospital is no longer fit for purpose in its current state and they have drawn a line in the sand.” Ms Lovell said.
Ms Lovell said the hundreds of people who attended the recent rally clearly showed how important the hospital was to the Swan Hill community.
“The Swan Hill community are proud of the staff at the hospital and the wonderful service they provide but the facility has reached the end of its working life in its present state,” Ms Lovell said.
“That is why I have called on the Minister to visit the Swan Hill Hospital for herself to inspect the current condition of the facility and support the Swan Hill community by providing a commitment to fund the rebuild of the hospital.”
