Over the past 12 months there has been significant concern about local roads in the Greater Shepparton area, and council has acknowledged that a lack of state funding assistance is limiting what works can be afforded.
During this parliament sitting week, Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell raised the issue with the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, seeking assistance from the government for Greater Shepparton City Council and other regional councils for their road works.
“The Greater Shepparton City Council is struggling to afford road maintenance works, and the Andrews Labor Government is failing to provide any assistance to help councils plug the shortfall,” Ms Lovell said.
“Roads concerns have been the focus of many local campaigns over the past 12 months, particularly on social media where I am often contacted and told of issues of concern.
“This has been reflected in the recently released Local Government Satisfaction Reports, in which Greater Shepparton scored only 40% for satisfaction with local sealed roads down from 48% last year – significantly lower than the state wide average of 69%.
“Council’s corporate services director has recently expressed concern on mounting pressure on council and declining state government grant sources and other funding for local roads.
“The Minister has acknowledged that council road maintenance is an issue, particularly in regional and rural areas, yet has taken no action to address this.”
Ms Lovell said this is unacceptable, and has requested the Minister to provide additional funding to the Greater Shepparton City Council – as well as other local councils in Northern Victoria – to help with much-needed local road maintenance.
