The Macedon Ranges Shire Council is struggling to afford road maintenance works thanks to the Andrews Labor Government removing state funding streams.
In Parliament this week, Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell said that roads in rural and regional areas such as the Macedon region have deteriorated significantly over the past 12 months, and blamed this in large part on the Andrews Labor Government cutting the $80m Country Roads and Bridges Program, which resulted in a loss of $1 million a year to the Macedon council.
In the recently released Local Government Satisfaction Reports, Macedon scored only 48 per cent for satisfaction with local sealed roads, which is down from 58 per cent last year and significantly lower than the state wide average of 69 per cent. Satisfaction for local unsealed roads was only 42 per cent.
“Roads concerns have been the focus of many local campaigns over the past 12 months, particularly on social media,” Ms Lovell said.
“The Minister has acknowledged that council road maintenance is an issue, particularly in regional and rural areas, yet has taken no action to address this.
“During a recent meeting, Macedon council raised with me that it is struggling to cover the cost of maintenance of their local road network.
“Unfortunately, this government has made it very hard for local councils to fund works such as road maintenance, by cutting grant and infrastructure programs that used to go toward road funding.
“This is unacceptable, so I have requested the Minister to provide additional funding to the Macedon Council – as well as other local councils in Northern Victoria – to help with much-needed local road maintenance.”
