LOVELL CALLS FOR SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT BENALLA-TOCUMWAL ROAD/YARRAWONGA ROAD INTERSECTION

Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell is pushing the Victorian Government to take urgent action on the dangerous conditions of the Benalla-Tocumwal Road/Yarrawonga Road t-intersection.
Ms Lovell was recently contacted by a community member who was involved in a single-vehicle accident at the intersection late one night in early February.
“The woman advised me that she and her husband were returning from a trip to Yarrawonga and did not realise the intersection was approaching until there were on it, and so ended up driving straight through it and into the property across the road, luckily missing a gum tree but taking out a couple of fences on the way,” Ms Lovell said.
“She said they were not injured, but it was extremely lucky there was no other traffic at the time or it might have been a different story.”
The woman told Ms Lovell that the owners of the property they crashed into said they were the fifth vehicle in two years to go through the intersection and end up in their property, and they are fearful future accidents could result in serious injury or death.
Ms Lovell called on the Minister to take action – such as warning signs, lights or rumble strips – to improve safety at the intersection immediately.
“The government must take action before there is a serious injury or fatality,” Ms Lovell said.
