The Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has highlighted the importance of the planned extension of the La Trobe University Shepparton campus, citing the impact the project will have on regional development and addressing local workforce needs.
Speaking during an adjournment debate in State Parliament last week, Ms Lovell called on the Treasurer to give a commitment to provide funding of $5.1 million, being the State Government’s share of the proposed $21.4 million project.
The La Trobe University Shepparton campus plays an important role in economic, educational, social and cultural development of the Greater Shepparton community and offers degree courses based on the professional workforce needs of the region, such as nursing, social work, allied health, early childhood and primary education.
The planned extension will see the existing four-level building expand south to Stewart Street and the construction of a three-level multi-deck car park for use by La Trobe University and nearby GOTAFE, accommodating La Trobe University’s estimated 48% enrolment growth into the future.
Comments attributable to Member for Northern Victoria Region, Wendy Lovell:
“The La Trobe University Shepparton campus extension is an important project that will ensure the continued growth of this vital learning institution in the city of Shepparton, allowing the university to produce more graduates to potentially fill local workforce needs.
“It is estimated that $17 million will be value-added to the Greater Shepparton economy during the construction phase and $5 million ongoing post construction, supporting 83 jobs during construction and an additional 49 direct and indirect jobs upon completion.
“With youth unemployment currently at 17.5 per cent in the Shepparton region, it is vitally important to have options for our youth to further their education so they have the qualifications needed to gain employment.
“I call on the Treasurer to give a commitment to provide funding of $5.1 million towards the proposed $21.4 million La Trobe University Shepparton campus building extension.”
