The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has called on the Health Minister Jill Hennessy to accept her invitation to meet with Shepparton radiotherapy patients to highlight the dire need for services to be established in Shepparton.
Speaking during an adjournment matter in State Parliament recently, Ms Lovell invited the Health Minister to Shepparton so she can hear first-hand the stories of financial and emotional hardship local patients must endure by having to travel for this life-saving treatment.
“The Health Minister has virtually ignored all of the contributions I have made in Parliament on this issue; where I re-told the cancer journeys of Goulburn Valley radiotherapy patients that need to travel for radiotherapy treatment,” Ms Lovell said.
Ms Lovell said with GenesisCare ready and willing to build a radiotherapy facility in Shepparton, the time was well overdue for the Andrews Labor Government to work with the private health provider to ensure that publicly funded treatment will be available for all Goulburn Valley cancer patients who require it.
Ms Lovell said that Opposition Leader Matthew Guy had met with five brave local women during his recent visit to Shepparton and the meeting was a powerful forum that pressed home the necessity for local radiotherapy facilities to be built.
“If Matthew Guy can meet with local patients then surely the Health Minister can find time in her schedule and show them the same respect,” Ms Lovell said.
