The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has once again thrown her support behind the much talked about redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports Stadium, repeating calls for the Andrews Labor Government to contribute funding for the project.
In an adjournment debate in State Parliament this week, Ms Lovell called on the Minister for Sport John Eren to back the redevelopment by committing the State Government’s share of the funding totalling $15.5 million.
Ms Lovell said that Greater Shepparton City Council’s plan to transform the Shepparton Sports Stadium into the Shepparton Sports & Event Centre would finally provide Shepparton’s indoor sports lovers with the world-class facility they deserve.
“The current stadium has passed it’s used by date and the Shepparton community deserve a facility that will meet the community’s needs,” Ms Lovell said.
Ms Lovell said the lack of available seating for people attending the recent Big V basketball grand final highlighted the need for the redevelopment, which has been earmarked by Basketball Victoria as their number one infrastructure project. It is planned the redevelopment will be delivered in three stages with stage 1 estimated to cost $37 million.
“Stage 1 will include the design and construction of 3 new multi-purpose courts including a show court with a 3000 seat retractable grandstand, new wet area amenities, an administration hub and carpark,” Ms Lovell said.
The construction of the Shepparton Sports & Event Centre will create jobs and subsequent events will inject millions of dollars into the Greater Shepparton economy.”
“Labor and the current Member for Shepparton have totally ignored this project and I will continue to fight until we see the redevelopment funded and delivered.”
