The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has used a constituency question in State Parliament recently to call on the Andrews Labor Government to fund a planned renovation of the Kialla & District Fire Brigade station.
Ms Lovell said the brigade had applied for funding through the CFA Enhancing Volunteerism Grants Program and her question to the Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino urged the State Government to support the work of the brigade and provide a commitment to fund the project.
“The Kialla & District Fire brigade is a small but active brigade and this planned extension and renovation will assist to broaden their membership to better reflect the gender and ethnic diversity of the local community,” Ms Lovell said.
The current Kialla & District Fire Brigade station houses only one toilet and members are forced to change next to running or moving fire trucks due to no change room facilities. To attract a more diverse membership and improve the health and safety of all members, the brigade have had plans drawn up that involves the construction of male and female toilets and separate change room facilities.
Ms Lovell said the renovations would not only enhance the work of current membership but showed the brigade’s strong commitment to recruit more volunteers, particularly more female members in the future.
“The Kialla & District Fire Brigade do a fantastic job protecting their community and I applaud their desire to increase their membership, particularly more females into volunteer fire services,” Ms Lovell said.
“These renovations will help the brigade in the future as well as help the members continue their great work and that is why I have called on the Minister to support them and provide funding for the project.”
