Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell used this parliament sitting week to call on the state government to help Cobram SES secure official premises.
Ms Lovell was recently contacted by the SES, who informed her that there is a long-standing agreement between the Municipal Association of Victoria and VICSES whereby shires across Victoria provided SES units with shire-owned facilities and or land from which units can base their operations; however, this was never fulfilled in Cobram.
“The Cobram SES is currently capable of providing emergency response due solely to the generosity of the public,” Ms Lovell said.
“Their rescue truck is currently garaged at a private residence, and other assets such as boats, four wheel drives and trailers are inconveniently garaged 25km away at the Tocumwal SES headquarters in New South Wales.”
From the end of June 2017, SES units will transition to a model where funding is entirely under state government, so Cobram SES is now seeking funding from the Victorian Government to establish a VIC SES facility in Cobram, to ensure they can respond directly from Cobram, to improve emergency response times and outcomes.
“The Cobram SES have estimated the cost of the facility will be $1.6m, so I have called on the Victorian Government to grant the SES this money so they can establish a dedicated facility in Cobram,” Ms Lovell said.
